Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation, issued on January 1, 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln, emerged against the tumultuous backdrop of the American Civil War. For the enslaved population in Confederate-held territories, the Emancipation Proclamation held the promise of freedom and hope.

Most notably, the Emancipation Proclamation laid the groundwork for the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which permanently abolished slavery throughout the nation.
