How to Plan for ASALH Livestreaming Sessions
ASALH
Ending Racism USA is working with The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) to facilitate events on university and college campuses so students can view livestreamed sessions from ASALH’s Annual Conference. Over 1,000 students and scholars of Black history and life are expected to attend.
See Black History Scholars to Share with College Students for details about the 2023 Conference and use the information below as you plan your events.
How do I organize a watch party on my campus?
You have decided it is a good idea to organize a watch party on your campus. Here is what you need to do.
- Sign up on the Ending Racism USA website to receive updates as information becomes available.
- Decide what organization, course, or group of students you want to encourage to attend.
- Identify a venue. Any classroom or auditorium with a large screen that is connected to the internet will work.
- Identify staff or faculty who are available to run and support the streaming set-up and be present during the session..
- Decide what days and times during September 20-24 are possible for streaming events on your campus.
- Search the ASALH conference program to find one or more of the 48 sessions that you want to stream. See directions below for tips on searching the ASALH schedule to identify sessions you want to stream.
- Complete the sign-up form on the Ending Racism USA website with registration information. Arrange to have your institution become a patron of ASALH by sending the $500 fee to Ending Racism USA.
- If the fee is an obstacle at your institution, apply to Ending Racism USA for a grant for some or all of the fee by contacting Founding Executive Director Brenda Girton-Mitchell.
- Promote the event and the importance of the topics discussed at the ASALH conference.
Identify sessions you want to stream
The full conference program is available on the ASALH website. Use these steps to see the sessions that will be streamed each day:
- If you don't see a menu on the left of the program home page, click on the menu icon in the upper left corner to open it.
- When the left side menu opens, click on "Browse by Day" and then select a day.
- When the day's sessions display, click in the "Filter results" field at the top of the page and type the word "streaming."
- The streaming sessions for that day will display.
- Click on the title of any session for more information about it.

An example: 2022 ASALH livestream at Rust College
In 2022 Ending Racism USA made arrangements to stream three sessions from the 107th ASALH conference in Birmingham, Alabama to the Rust College campus in Holly Springs, Mississippi. A description of the program can be seen on Ending Racism USA's The 2022 ASALH Conference page.
The same model is being used this year to expand the program to more colleges and universities.
