Susan N. Terkel is the author of numerous nonfiction books about medical, social, and ethical issues, including Feeling Safe, Feeling Strong, one of the earliest juvenile books about sexual abuse and Finding Your Way, one of the first books to explain sexual ethics to teens. Her book People Power, which explains nonviolence, was listed in the ABA's "Pick of the List" and her book, Ethics, was selected as a Hungry Mind Review's "Editor's Choice" book and listed as recommended reading by Parents magazine. Colonial American Medicine was selected for Science Books and Films' "Best Children's Books" list. She has also written well-reviewed books about abortion, custody and other challenging issues.
Terkel wrote two books about drug policy: the first earned starred reviews; the second was selected by the American Library Association for their "100 Books College Bound Students Should Read." With Ms. Greenberg, one of her former editors, she coauthored The Circumcision Decision, which won a national parents award in 2013. Small Change, a book she coauthored with her husband Larry, was a Books for a Better Life Award finalist and featured in numerous national publications, including USA Today.
Terkel graduated from Cornell University where she studied Child Development and Family Relationships. She also studied social work at Case Western Reserve University and costume design at Kent State University. She is a long-time member of The Authors Guild and PEN, and has taught writing and publishing courses in Ohio and at The Chautauqua Institute. In addition to writing, she is an artist, wife, mother, grandmother and grand schmoozer.
